Bishop Stephen Gardiner – Lord Chancellor who burned Protestants under Mary I – was NOT Cardinal Wolsey’s bastard.

He was the legitimate son of John Gardiner of Bury St Edmunds (d.1507), cloth-merchant and younger brother of the man who killed Richard III. Source: PROB 11/15/219 (John’s will, 1507 – “my son Stephen”)
